Eyelet Patch Application

By Ruth Movido

Hi everyone!

Ruth here on the blog today to talk about the new grommets and cotton ribbon!

There are so many ways you can attach these to your garment—I am just going to show you how I did it. First, I decided where I wanted the grommet to go. Perhaps your pattern will have a suggested placement. If the pattern doesn’t include a suggested placement, just remember to take into account seam allowance and if the hood overlaps at all.

I added a square of iron-on interfacing to the back to help stabilize the spot. These grommets are on the larger size, so the hole will need to be fairly wide to not show the fabric underneath. I cut an X in my fabric where the middle of the grommet would land and turned those pieces inward and stitched around to hold it in place. These stitches will not show on the outside or inside of the hood, as long as your hood has a lining.

Then I placed my grommet patch on top and hand cranked it around in a circle. I love that there is a line to help guide your stitching! I used black thread to match the line already given.

From there, you can attach your lining, thread your ribbon or drawstring, and topstitch a channel to hold it in place. For my adult size hoodie, my channel was 2.5 inches wide and for my toddler’s I did 2 inches wide.

Tip: I love the look of the printed cotton ribbon! However, I also like to save as much as I can. So since I didn’t care about it actually functioning as a drawstring, I tacked it down in place as I sewed my grommet piece, which allowed me to use a much shorter length—that will stay in place—and reserve more of it for another hoodie or joggers!

To keep the cotton ribbon from unraveling with wash and wear, I double folded it into a tiny hem and stitched in place.

That’s it! I hope you all give these a try, and I can’t wait to see the amazing things you create!

(And a side note... Ruth wrote this amazing blog and sewed all this up when she is due any day. Isn't she just glowing?! <3 ). Thank you Ruth for all you do over at Shine Bright!
